The Long Lost Past Revisited
monuments
await
accolades
frozen
in a sense
they are past tense
just as endless
numb
as rigor mortis
this death
so inevitable
our battle-worn heroes here
alive once
succumbed to the Great Beyond
we hold remembrance
to the long lost past
lives lived beyond flesh
as if dead already
all yesterdays
follows our heels
today
those whom fate sealed
those who lay beneath
those surrender to eventuality
may or may not know what we do not
T'were more than this
born to die
all our accomplishments
dust
life's long road
eventually to meet
death seems inordinately longer
a very mean street
let us tread
ginger lightly
as not to disturb
or evoke or
prematurely bring upon
the dread of kings
this inevitable recourse
the most accursed curse
tis death
so think those lively enough not to know
unliveliness
as so many more above
than us below
yet snidely still above ground
clinging to this bit of grievous pain
to keep lit the flickering flame
that love has
known us
so will the dead want the same too
the dead also rises
bless us each morning
this spring never-ending
come back to life!
spirit blessings
kept lit
on the shelf
upon the place beneath
we bring back this life
life after life
time after time
the past to revisit
the nowhere now
give us this allowance
give us endless being
formed in the lightEST body
be they quick or be they dead
or slow like me
not rushing the backfire
treading every step with care
inching ever closer
the grave that would be more like a home
since we spend so much time there
as a peaceful silent place
a one stop-shop of everlasting peace
a rest-stop on the endless highway
a black velvet painting with no neon lights
as so suddenly unbeingness begets
the long goodbye of no tomorrows
the big sleep
held in queue
tis odd this life
of opposites
~to the duality~

"The long good bye of no tomorrows"
ReplyDeleteNice........
:)
Great depth to your words.
ReplyDeleteYou found most of the phrases we use...
ReplyDeleteWhat else can we do in front of the mystery but seem mysterious or else sling platitudes?
My goodness. This poem calls out for a page and not the screen to hold it, because a lot is going on! There are passages with strong senses of period -- the battleworn heroes and the Great Beyond felt like the Great War, the mean street felt '30s, the one-stop-shop felt decidedly contemporary -- and so I am guessing I would get the progression if I studied the poem more. And I wondered if you were making a shape poem along the lines of the monument, as the curves drew me too. Among the lines that grabbed me most were "they are past tense", the recourse/curse sequence, and the velvet/neon part, which made me think of Elvis.
ReplyDeleteSome fine, fine lines in this remarkable piece. I'm particularly fond of the images in:
ReplyDeletenot rushing the backfire
treading every step with care
inching ever closer
elegaic elegance
ReplyDeletethis is written so well and evocative...it brings that past to life in some ways the revisiting of it is rather haunting though very real...i like...
ReplyDeleteThis reads like a prayer, so lyrical.
ReplyDeletevery enjoyable to peruse.

I love the format of this piece as much as the words. This is the killer line for me:
ReplyDelete'a one stop-shop of everlasting peace'
That's a cracker that is! Brilliant, Chicco....
Gentle and beautiful poem.
ReplyDeleteProfound, Jane. I loved the lines
ReplyDelete"to keep lit the flickering flame
that love has
known us", the most.
Wonderful poem, of great depth, to think and reflect without haste. Greetings.
